IOS-XRv On Virtual-Box :
First of all, we assume that you have downloaded IOS XRv (link provided on the previous Post). You’ll be presented with two files:
Once you got the files, go to Virtual-Box to start the installation.
I choose Virtual-box because it has a built-in integration with GNS3 which make it easier to integrate and configure.
On Virtual-box, there are two manners to configure IOS-XRv:
- Via VMDK file.
- Via OVA file.
The 1st one consist of a new VM creation based on the disk on VMDK file. I actually tested this method but It seems to me that it had some issues with Vbox , so I’d rather present the simplest and working one, which bring us to the 2nd one via OVA.
To configure IOS-XRv via OVA open Virtual-box and go to file — > import Appliance:
Look for your OVA file :
Hit next, Give your XR a name, check “reinitialize the mac address of all network cards” and hit “import” :
The importation starts and will take less that one minute :
VM Tweaking :
Once the importation is done, we should tweak a bit our VM. Go to the created VM and choose Settings.
On System Tab, lower the memory to 1024 (its enough !!). make sure to uncheck floopy and CD/DVD (you won’t need it).
On Network Tab configure your Host-only adapter as shown :
Hit Ok and here you are, your IOS XRv VM is ready. Lets configure it on GNS3.
IOS-XRv GNS3 Configuration :
Open GNS3 / Edit / Preferences / Virtual-Box :
Note : Make sure to check the Path to VBoxwrapper and test the settings.
Once it’s done, you should go to VirtualBox Guest, Give your XR router a name, refresh the VM list, choose the VM we configured above from the list, change the NICs to 4 and check options as shown:
Validate your edition and go back to GNS3 to drag/drop your XR router:
Start your XR router and console to it:
